A 2009 survey conducted by a Uitsig Primary School on the implementation of Indigenous languages at Primary School level has culminated in the milestone launch of the first designated African languages classroom at a Government school in Centurion.
The first official iSizulu and Setswana classes were started by Uitsig Primary School Governing Body in January 2013. The languages were initially offered as extra-curricular disciplines however, with learner interest and growth in enrolments, it was concluded that they would form part of the main school curricular i.e. fully examinable subjects.
21 May 2016 saw the official launch of the African Languages Programme at Uitsig Primary School in The Reeds. In attendance were Gauteng Department of Education Officials, Officials from neighbouring Schools, Parents and African Language Learners.
The next step in this bold initiative is for the local high schools to implement the teaching of the African languages into their syllabus.
